Warm days, balmy evenings and those famous Cable Beach sunsets make Broome one of WA’s most iconic winter destinations. From 21 August to 6 September 2026, the town will shine even brighter as Shinju Matsuri returns with an extended 17-day celebration of culture, food, music and community spirit.
For caravanners and campers planning a Kimberley escape, Shinju Matsuri is one of those bucket-list experiences that captures everything people love about Broome – incredible local flavours, rich multicultural history, unforgettable coastal events and that relaxed north west atmosphere that keeps people coming back year after year.
The 2026 festival theme, Tidal Treasures, reflects the power and energy of Broome’s remarkable tides and the many gifts they bring to the region, from the pearling history that helped shape the town, to the natural beauty and experiences locals and visitors enjoy today.
A festival inspired by Broome’s rich culture and history
Shinju Matsuri, meaning “Festival of the Pearl”, has grown from humble community beginnings into one of regional WA’s most celebrated cultural festivals.
Today, the festival is a vibrant showcase of the many cultures that have shaped Broome over generations, bringing together incredible food, live music, arts, community events and unforgettable experiences under the Kimberley sky.
With the 2026 festival now running across 17 days, there are even more opportunities to soak it all in.
Choose Your Adventure
With events spread across more than two weeks, there’s something to suit everyone – whether you’re chasing relaxed sunset vibes, incredible dining experiences or lively nights under the stars.
Floating Lanterns Matsuri | Sunday 30 August
A much-loved festival tradition, the Floating Lanterns Matsuri at Gantheaume Beach is one of Shinju’s most beautiful and memorable experiences.
Inspired by the Japanese Obon celebration, this free community event invites festival-goers to write messages of hope, love or reflection onto glowing lanterns before setting them afloat on the warm Indian Ocean waters at sunset.
As hundreds of lanterns drift gently out to sea, there’s an almost magical atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of Broome. (and don’t worry, the event team will make sure these are all collected by boat so that there is no effect on the natural ecosystem!)
Chinatown Feast | Friday 28 August
Broome’s vibrant Chinatown precinct will once again transform into a bustling Hawker-style dining experience with a Kimberley twist.
Expect incredible local flavours, lively entertainment and a buzzing atmosphere as locals and visitors gather beneath the lights in the heart of town for a night celebrating Broome’s diverse cultural roots.
Sand ‘n Sounds | Friday 4 September
Back again in 2026 with a Latin-inspired dance party theme, Sand ‘n Sounds promises another unforgettable evening on Cable Beach.
With a drink on arrival in hand, settle into the sunset before dancing the night away to incredible DJs spinning Latin beats as the ocean breeze rolls in.
Dress Code: Tropical, colourful or spicy — think bold prints, sunset tones, breezy resort wear and a touch of Latin flair.
Sunset Long Table Dinner | Saturday 5 September
Few dining experiences in WA compare to Shinju Matsuri’s premier event, the Sunset Long Table Dinner.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Cable Beach, guests will enjoy an opulent evening dining under the stars with a premium all-inclusive Western Australian beverage selection and a menu inspired by Broome’s rich cultural tapestry.
Featuring local ingredients and seasonal produce from the region, the evening also includes entertainment from local and touring musicians and performers, before the celebrations continue with dancing in the sand beneath the Kimberley sky.
It’s one of those only-in-Broome experiences that stays with you long after the trip is over.
Dress Code: Cocktail or formal beach attire — be prepared to kick off your shoes and feel the sand between your toes.
